Yaz Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

The progestin hormone drospirenone, used in the popular birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin, has been linked to blood clot-related events like Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that forms deep beneath the skin’s surface, often in the thigh or lower leg. Studies have shown that drospirenone can raise levels of potassium in the blood, which increases the risk of blood clots and Yaz DVT.

Blood clots are clusters of blood that have hardened, and are the body’s natural defense mechanism in healing wounds and repairing injured blood vessels. However, blood clots can also form as a result of drug side effects, as with Yaz DVT.

Clots that break free can move through blood vessels to the heart, lungs or brain, causing pain and the potential for serious injury or even death.

Only about half of people who experience DVT have any symptoms. Common signs can include:

  • Swelling of a leg or a vein in the leg
  • Increased warmth in the swollen leg
  • Pain or tenderness in the leg, which you may feel only when standing or walking
  • Red or discolored skin n the leg that’s swollen or painful

See your doctor right away if you have any of these signs or symptoms.

To date, thousands of women have filed lawsuits for Yaz DVT and other blood clot-related injuries after taking Yaz.  Bayer Healthcare, the maker of these drugs, has started settling many of these cases and has set aside at least $1.5 billion to resolve claims for blood clot side effects.

If you believe you have suffered a blood clot injury like DVT, pulmonary embolism or stroke after taking Yaz, it is important to speak with a lawyer about your legal options. You may be entitled to substantial compensation from a settlement.

The FDA, British Medical Journal, Institute for Safe Medicine Practices, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have all issued warnings about Yaz and Yasmin.

Despite these warnings, Yaz is still one of the most widely used birth control drugs in the United States. Yet, the FDA has not yet issued a recall of these drugs.

Due to more than 12,000 lawsuits filed by women suffering side effects from Yaz, Bayer recently announced they had begun settling certain cases. These include injuries related to blood clots like pulmonary embolism and Yaz DVT.

If you or a loved one have suffered a DVT, a lawyer can counsel you on whether you qualify for compensation and advise you on taking action. There is a statute of limitations on Yaz claims, so it is important to act quickly.

Lawsuits for defective drug injuries can be very challenging. Before you choose a lawyer, ask them if they are qualified for this type of case, how many they have handled, and whether they have the resources to pursue litigation against a large drug company. This can greatly affect your outcome.

The DrugNews Center only recommends lawyers and law firms that specialize exclusively in defective drug and medical device litigation, and have already settled Yaz lawsuits.
